In this outstanding cultural biography, the author of the New York Times bestseller A Slave in the White House chronicles a critical yet overlooked chapter in American history: the inspiring rise and calculated fall of the black elite, from Emancipation through Reconstruction to the Jim Crow Era--embodied in the experiences of an influential figure of the time, academic, entrepreneur, and political activist and black history pioneer Daniel Murray.

In the wake of the Civil War, Daniel Murray, born free and educated in Baltimore, was in the vanguard of Washington, D.C.'s black upper class. Appointed Assistant Librarian at the Library of Congress--at a time when government appointments were the most prestigious positions available for blacks--Murray became wealthy through his business as a construction contractor and married a college-educated socialite. The Murrays' social circles included some of the first African-American U.S. Senators and Congressmen, and their children went to the best colleges--Harvard and Cornell.

Though Murray and other black elite of his time were primed to assimilate into the cultural fabric as Americans first and people of color second, their prospects were crushed by Jim Crow segregation and the capitulation to white supremacist groups by the government, which turned a blind eye to their unlawful--often murderous--acts. Elizabeth Dowling Taylor traces the rise, fall, and disillusionment of upper-class African Americans, revealing that they were a representation not of hypothetical achievement but what could be realized by African Americans through education and equal opportunities.

As she makes clear, these well-educated and wealthy elite were living proof that African Americans did not lack ability to fully participate in the social contract as white supremacists claimed, making their subsequent fall when Reconstruction was prematurely abandoned all the more tragic. Illuminating and powerful, her magnificent work brings to life a dark chapter of American history that too many Americans have yet to recognize.

Nice quality but questionable fit!
Color: Navy 09, Size: Large
I recently purchased the Alex Vando Mens Golf Shirt in size Large. The fabric quality has a good feel to it — it feels smooth, breathable, and the moisture-wicking seems to work well during light activity. However, the sizing and fit were inconsistent. I ordered a Large, but when I tried it on, it was somewhat tight and fitted around the mid-section, despite not saying "slim fit". I would say I am average size: 5' 9", and 195 pounds. I were a size Large in 98% of the clothing I purchase. This was more like a size Medium - Long. That said, the shirt is also very long! Like, abnormally long. If you're tall (over 6'), this shirt will be perfect. But for anyone else, it won't fit quite as nice. I had to return it as I think an XL would be huge on me!

Sexy jacket!
Size: XX-Large, Color: Blue
I want to first say that the jacket looks exactly as pictured the color is very spot on it's not too washed out and not too blue. I bought it for my male partner, It really gives him the rugged look without making him look intimidating or too much like an emo boy. I'm thinking hipster style. Secondly, you have to size up if you are intending to wear this jacket on top of a sweatshirt or anything thicker than a t-shirt. I'm so glad that I read reviews before purchasing this because if I had bought his size it would have fit him but he would not have been able to wear a sweater or sweatshirt under it. My partner is tall and about an XL in sizing. The jacket stops just at his waist and accentuates how tall he is. Sleeve length is perfect. I will also say that it's not super thick, it's a great fall jacket just good enough to stay warm in brisk weather. This is more of a fashion piece than it is a coat. Something that no one mentioned is there are two large pockets on the inside of the jacket that my boyfriend loves because he can now hide snacks in them. This jacket honestly gives me New York Street fashion vibes and I love it so much I plan on stealing it from him time to time.

Fabric super durable, genuine denim. Fit was a bit tight for the size but still looked perfect and easy to style/accessorize. Don't even like pink and it's a new favorite fit!

Order regular size. 6' tall, get a medium.
Size: Medium, Color: A3#white
It's a pretty good jean jacket. Sizing is the main issue, suggestions for what size to order very from ordering your normal size to order 2 sizes larger. I'm 6' tall and skinny, got a medium which is my regular size, this thing fits me just like the model, coming to my waistband with enough room to fit a hoodie underneath. Not sure why the seller is telling people to order 2 sizes up, since jean jackets are supposed to be a little bit short and thin compared to other jackets. One slight issue is the size of the button holes. 3 of mine were too small to fit the buttons through. Easy fix with a knife though. Material quality is good, it wasn't easy to cut. I dyed mine yellow and it took the dye quite well, if you're considering doing that with yours.
