Dr. Jean Glidden Cheger was born in Gladwin, Michigan, on 6 October, 1929. She attended Wayne State University and was awarded a BS in 1963 followed by an MEd in 1964 and an EdD in 1967. She attended incidental graduate classes at San Diego State College, the University of Louisville, and University of Michigan. Upon completion of the BS degree, her first teaching position was in elementary education between 1963 and 1965. Beginning in 1965 until 1968, she held the position of Assistant Professor of Sociology at Kentucky Southern College. (That institution was eventually joined to the University of Louisville.) From 1965 to 1968, she also lectured at the University of Louisville. From 1968 until her retirement, she served as Full Professor of Sociology at Delta College in Michigan.

In the early years of her career, Dr. Cheger was greatly influenced by Professor Earl Kelley of Wayne State University and A. S. Neill of Summerhill fame; Summerhill existed as an English experimental school. Dr. Cheger was a member of the American Sociological Association, the American Association of University Professors, and served as President of the Michigan Sociological Association in 1977-78. After receiving a Speech Activity Award from Wayne State University as an undergrad student, she continued throughout her professional career to actively participate in a variety of Theatrical projects. Her “Swan Song” for on-stage acting was in 2009 when she accepted a small part in Macbeth for the Lakeland, Florida Community Theater Group.

At Delta College, she earned a coveted Bergstein Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1971, the minimum time for new faculty members; ten years later she was presented a second Bergstein as the first faculty member to be so honored by faculty and students in the history of the college.

Community service has always been of paramount importance in her professional career. She has served on a variety of boards, including the Saginaw Pit and Balcony Community Theater Board, the Saginaw Symphony Board, and as President of the Saginaw YWCA. She edited a book, Sex Regulation in Society – Problems and Issues, and another on human sexual behavior. She traveled to several European areas, including Russia and Poland. While in England, she visited Summerhill School, an Aging Conference in Madrid, and the Mormon College while in Hawaii. She had the opportunity to visit the grave of her 27th great-grandmother – Eleanor of Aquitaine in France.

She married Michael Cheger in 1948, and there are three children from the marriage; each of whom happens to be Solid “Go Blue.” Their oldest, Cheryl, is a retired Saginaw Township High School Music Teacher. Their son, David, is a businessman in the South, and their youngest, Laura, currently serves as a Judge in Lapeer County, Michigan.

In addition to teaching and theater, Dr. Cheger has continued to have an ongoing interest in the women’s movement, family life education and research, international peace activities, and genealogy. She is a life member of the National Society of Americans of Royal Descent, the Order of the Three Crusades, and the Order of the Crown Charlemagne Society.

fit and comfort
Size: 8.5, Color: Grey, Size: 8.5, Color: Grey
Perfect fit, i was a little anxious about the size and fit. As you can see in the pictures, they look great and they are very light. I would give them a five-star rating as the comfort is there, only the point is a little hard on the toes, I hope that goes away with usage.

Comfortable Oxford style shoes
Size: 10, Color: Black, Size: 10, Color: Black
Comfortable shoes that almost slip on each time. The material is a cotton mesh that is very soft and breathes well. I would not recommend walking in wet grass as the water can get through the mesh and make your feet wet. I normally wear size 10 for sneakers and this was true to size. I have extra room in the toe box. I do think the shoe feels a little narrow, but with the mesh area being stretchy, it does not cause any discomfort. The narrowness of the shoe makes it look more form fitting around my feet. Overall the shoe is comfortable while also giving an impression of high quality foot wear. It looks elegant too. The shoes also seem pretty durable given how much they feel like sneakers. The leather at the tip of the shoe does not scuff easily, which is great! Overall good value too!

Poor quality
Size: 12, Color: Black
Poor quality. Returned after arrival, soles seem to be made of plastic.

High End Style Without the Markup
Size: 12, Color: Navy, Size: 12, Color: Navy
I love the deep navy color of these shoes because it looks even richer in person than it does in the online photos. I usually wear a size 12 and these do have some extra room so could have gone down a half size. The white sole creates a nice contrast that makes the navy color pop. For me, these hit that perfect sweet spot where I look put together at work that is business casual without feeling like I am wearing stiff or formal dress shoes. These are comfortable shoes because the fabric is breathable and keeps my feet cool throughout the day. I especially like that the toe box bends naturally and does not leave ugly permanent creases across the top of the shoe. The padding around the ankle is soft and there is no rubbing even when I am walking a lot. My favorite part has to be the slight stretch around the opening because it lets me kick them off or slide them on without having to touch the laces. This is a total win for my lazy side and makes them my go to pair when I am headed out the door in a hurry. The stitching feels very durable and the overall build quality seems like it will hold up for a long time.

Good value for the money.
Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Beige
Comfortable right out of the box. Great style and well made. The more you wear the softer they get but maintain their overall appearance.
